Jeffrey Williams, this is your pantomime
Friends travel from all over the country to bid farewell to departing Abbey Organist
The Friends of Romsey Abbey Choir held its annual Epiphany Supper in the Church Rooms on 10 January. The advertised theme for the entertainment after the meal was the Pantomime but, in view of the retirement of Jeffrey Williams on the previous Sunday, a break with tradition was only fit and proper.
An unsuspecting Jeff and his wife Diane were called out on stage by Rob Gower to take the lead roles in a pantomime to be played, so they were told, by members of the audience. At this point, however, onto the stage strode Mike Rowland to perform his Michael Aspel impression and announce to Jeff: this is your pantomime.
Mike then proceeded to compere reappearances by long-lost colleagues and friends from the ranks of organists, former choristers and lay clerks. Last but certainly not least was a real surprise guest, Bruce Buchanan. Formerly of organ-builders J.W. Walker and Sons, who built the original instrument in the Nineteenth Century and completed its renovation to Jeffrey's specification, Bruce paid a simple, humorous and poignant tribute, having travelled all the way from Liverpool to be present.
A video compilation by Dick Hewett and Neil Beasley reminded the audience of Jeffrey's contribution to the artistic life of the Choir, both at services in cathedrals around the country and on stage in the Church Rooms, making a fool of himself in Epiphany Supper entertainments over the years.
Grateful thanks must, as ever, be paid to Choirmums, who prepared a delicious beef stroganoff with second helpings for those who were tempted followed by a range of desserts. The raffle was conducted, amid much hilarity, by Jon de Sausmarez.
The evening had begun with three carols conducted by Timothy Rogerson; it likewise ended with song as the choir, in a final tribute to Jeffrey, updated Abba's Thank you for the music.
