Jeffrey Williams, Abbey Organist, 1990 - 2004
Born and brought up in Cornwall, Jeffrey Williams read music at Bath and
studied the organ at Bath Abbey with Dudley Holroyd. He graduated in 1979
and took a post-graduate course in Music Education before moving to Hampshire
in 1980. He has since taught in both the state and independent sectors
and is now Director of Music at Embley Park School in Romsey, as well
as a member of the panel of Music Examiners for Trinity
College, London.
Jeffrey has been associated with the music at Romsey Abbey since 1982, initially as Assistant Organist. In 1990, however, he was appointed Organist and Master of the Choristers and, since then, has built up the choir into one of the largest and most successful all-male Parish Church Choirs in the South of England.
1995/96 saw a major restoration of the organ in Romsey Abbey, carried out under Jeffrey's supervision as consultant for the project, whilst in 1999 he was appointed Organ Advisor to the Winchester Diocesan Advisory Committee. He tries to find time to pursue his work as a recitalist and, in addition to his recitals at the Abbey, he has played recently at Truro and Winchester Cathedrals. In 1997 he released a CD recording of the restored organ at Romsey, extracts of which have been featured on the BBC Radio 2 programme, The Organist Entertains. Jeffrey is married and has two children.
