We concluded another busy academic year in splendid style at Choral Evensong on Sunday 25 July, singing the Te Deum from Herbert Howell’s Collegium Regale cycle of canticles as the anthem. It made its welcome return to our repertoire after an absence of some years. Following the service, Robert Fielding presented trophies and chocolates to the boys for their achievements during the term.
We fielded no less than 23 boys for the service – a real achievement for a parish church choir – who tackled with gusto the often difficult treble line in this highlight of the cathedral repertoire. They have had a busy term, taking part in a concert with Romsey Choral Society, singing Benjamin Britten’s cantata Saint Nicholas and, with the men, singing at Sherborne Abbey. Over the last year we have also sung at Christchurch Priory, Winchester Cathedral and toured the North of England.
We are now taking our summer break and and will return to the choir stalls in early September. In the meantime, we will be singing at Wells Cathedral next month; the Te Deum and its companion Jubilate Deo make their next appearance there at Mattins on Sunday 28 August. Do join us then.
